Motorcycle tour of Sicily (to the boot of Europe)

Day 7 (Sicily 1 Mount Etna)

Today we're heading up to the highest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna! The route isn't too long at 241 km, but it includes some stunning stretches, from the ascent of Mount Etna on both the north and south sides to the scenic drive through unspoiled Sicily. It's definitely worth setting off early to fully appreciate the day's diversity. From the coast, we first head towards the north side of Etna. The climb is fast and winding. What's striking is the lack of traffic; only one other group of motorcyclists, like us, are enjoying the curves. A first lava field stops the flow of traffic and invites a photo session. From the Etna North station, we descend in a series of curves before cruising back up the south side. Compared to Etna North, the Etna South station is absolutely packed! However, with a motorcycle, you can always find a parking spot. Tourists are brought up by tour bus, and there seems to be a bit of a crowd everywhere. We leave Etna South and turn our attention to the more authentic Sicily. On a scenic road winding through rolling hills and picturesque mountains, you'll pass wheat fields and sheep pastures. In contrast, there are red tomato fields and the blue surface of Lake Pozzillo. A hairpin bend towards the eagles' nests adds further excitement. The route continues through valleys and across a plateau, right through the heart of Sicily. From here, it's all downhill towards the sea. Near the coast, cacti line the slopes, creating a vibrant display of color. The day ends on the coast.
