Day 8 (Sicily 2 Pure)

The Original Sicily, Part 2. We cross the island from north to south through rolling hills and on roads so sparsely traveled that you're tempted to count the traffic. We leave the coast and drive uphill on a winding road to a mountain village. Nestled in the Madonie Mountains, this village, with its castle clinging to the hillside, seems like a relic from another era. After leaving the village, we enter a beautiful forest of oaks and ash trees. As bustling as the village was, this road is equally quiet and virtually traffic-free. After many kilometers, we reach a plateau and see villages scattered across the hills, perched like eagles' nests. The landscape is characterized by agriculture, from wheat fields to vineyards on the hillsides. Although the roads are rarely used, the asphalt is often damaged and uneven. We come to a roundabout with a mannequin dressed as a motorcyclist. An unexpected eye-catcher that forces us to stop! Later, we drive through an eagle's nest, navigating several curves and then through some of the narrow streets. Shortly after, the yellow/green monotony is interrupted by a lake with its impressive blue water. This color is so captivating that we head for the shore. Unfortunately, a refreshing dip is out of the question, as swimming is prohibited. From here, we continue on roads that are sometimes more, sometimes less busy, towards the coast and the sea. We end the day at a campsite in a small town with direct access to a wide sandy beach.
