Maritime Alps
The Maritime Alps, located on the border between France and Italy, are among the most attractive off-road regions in Europe. Numerous former military roads, including the famous Assietta Ridge Road and the Col de Sommeiller at an altitude of around 2,997 metres, offer spectacular driving experiences in an alpine environment.
Many of these routes are generally legal to drive on, but they are not automatically open to public traffic. Depending on the route, permits or seasonal access restrictions may be required. The difficulty level usually ranges from moderate to challenging and includes long gravel sections, steep climbs, and driving at altitudes of up to 3,000 metres.
Careful route planning, suitable equipment, and compliance with local access regulations are therefore essential. All important information on the three regions (40 off-road routes) has been compiled in our Maritime Alps off-road guide.
Best time to travel
The best time to visit the Maritime Alps is generally between June and October. During this period, most mountain passes, military roads, and off-road tracks are free of snow and accessible.
June
- Higher routes may still have snowfields
- Ideal time for quiet tours with little traffic
- Pleasant temperatures in valleys and mid-altitudes
July / August
- Most routes are completely snow-free
- Stable weather conditions and long daylight hours
- Some routes can be busy on weekends and during holiday periods
September
- For many riders the best time of year
- Often stable weather and clear visibility
- Significantly fewer tourists than in summer
- Pleasant temperatures for longer tours
October
- First snowfall possible at higher elevations
- Some routes may already be closed due to weather conditions
- Particularly beautiful autumn landscapes and quiet trails
Tip: Before every trip, always check current route accessibility, local regulations, and weather forecasts. In the Maritime Alps, conditions in higher altitudes can change rapidly.
