BA11 Sierra Corafe Canyon and Vultures

 
The Gorafe desert in southern Spain can be crossed with an off-road vehicle such as an enduro or 4x4 SUV.

Route description
After a few kilometers, we reach an old railway line; the tracks have already been removed. The surface is coarse gravel and not the best terrain for our adventure touring motorcycle with street tires. We ride through tunnels and come to old railway bridges spanning gorges.

As we drive from the paved road onto the dirt track, a canyon appears, over which about 20 griffon vultures are circling. These birds have a wingspan of about 2 meters. We see a parking area where animal carcasses lie; it must be a feeding station set up for the vultures. We take a short break and watch the birds as they land.

The journey continues along a gravel road, always following the edge of a canyon. The scenery here is stunning, with rugged rock formations everywhere. After a few more kilometers, we find ourselves in the heart of the canyon, driving through an old, dry riverbed. Ten-meter-high rock walls rise on either side. We then cross a small ford and, after several more kilometers, reach civilization again.
